McBAIN, Cynthia Valmai: died peacefully on Monday March 30, 2026. Dearly beloved wife of Sydney McBain (deceased), and daughter of Malcolm (Mac) and Mollie (Norma) Monteath, sister to Mary Hawley, and brother to Dennis Monteath. She was a much loved mother and mother-in-law of Suzanne and David, Malcolm and Sue, and grandmother of Caitlin, Alec, Simone, Alex, Joss, Katie, Troy, Breeanah, and Robbie, great-grandmother to Blake, Noah, and Olivia. Passed away peacefully and, as always, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, August 19th, 2025, in her 92nd year. Adored mother, mother-in-law, Nana and great-grandmother of the following families: Sherron and Alan Harrison, Toby and Rachel with Mitchell, Kyla and James with Tilly and Floyd, Penny and Andy with Claudia and Sammy; Yolyn and Nick Goldschmidt, Chelsea and Dane, Luke, Royce, Katherine and Austin, Hilary and Chayton; Lesley and Gary Mehrtens, Shannon and Hayward with James and Emily, Tanya and Stephen and family, Aleisha and Mark and family, Kelsey and family. Val took advantage of every moment of her life to share with family and friends. She traveled extensively from the age of 21 to all parts of the world and continued into her late 80s. Being a part of her families’ lives meant being an active spectator at dance shows, school plays and sports games. She was active in the senior community with bowls, bingo and day trips. There was never a moment that she did not enjoy a good laugh with us all. Valerie will be greatly missed. Her family wishes to thank the gentle support of the staff at Christchurch Hospital for their care and compassion in her last days. In accordance with Valerie’s wishes a private cremation will be held.
